Deaf Awareness Week 2024 – Love and Trust

Monday 6 May 2024 to Sunday 12 May 2024

About 1 in 6 people have hearing loss. 7 in 10 people affected by hearing loss are over 70 which is expected to increase by 50% in the next 20 years.

Deaf and people with hearing loss may feel:

  • misunderstood
  • unheard
  • invisible
  • isolated

Deaf Awareness Week 2024 aims to:

  • encourage a collaborative environment – this means individuals, organisations and governments work together to create an inclusive society

Right to communication

Communication access is a fundamental human right for everyone. This is regardless of their hearing ability.

In Scotland, The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities includes the right to be informed about, and involved in, healthcare and health services.

This information is available in a British Sign Language video with subtitles and English voiceover.

How to get involved

You can support Deaf Awareness Week by sharing the following links:

3 cartoon characters. On the left a woman waves and holds a tablet. Text beside her says 'deaf user'. In the centre a woman has a purple headset on and does BSL in front of a laptop screen. Text beside her says 'online interpreter'. On the right a man wearing a shirt and tie is on the phone. Text beside him says 'heading user'.
