Garadh a Bhagh a Tuath (Northbay Garden) is known locally as the “Garadh” and has grown from a small service, into a vibrant social enterprise, achieving Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation [SCIO] status in 2011.
The principal purpose and aim of the Garadh is to advance the care, support and training needs of adults, resident on the islands of Barra and Vatersay with physical or learning disabilities, mental health problems or substance misuse problems. We achieve this by providing a space for all members of our community to volunteer regardless of assessed need or physical ability. Our organisation also works with visiting adults with assessed care needs from surrounding islands and mainland UK.
The organisation delivers its activities through volunteering from the Garadh, a therapeutic garden site in Northbay which includes a building with a small office and meeting room named Am Bothan and three Keder greenhouses.
There is a service user-led dementia-friendly community café set up weekly at the nearby village hall. Activities include craft workshops, garden centre and gardening services.
