Who can get the meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine

The meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine helps protect against meningitis and sepsis (blood poisoning) caused by meningococcal bacteria B.

The MenB vaccine is offered to all babies across Scotland. It’s free of charge from the NHS.

3 doses of the MenB vaccine are needed

Your baby will be invited to have 3 doses of the MenB vaccine. This helps to increase their immunity and provide longer term protection. It’s important to bring your child to each appointment to help protect them from serious diseases.

The first dose is given at 8 weeks old.

The second dose is given at 12 weeks old.

The final dose is given at 12 to 13 months old.

Often, your baby will have their MenB vaccine at the same time as other routine vaccinations.

Reasons your baby should not have the vaccine

There are very few reasons why children cannot be vaccinated.

The vaccines should not be given to babies who have had:

  • a confirmed anaphylactic (severe) reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine
  • a confirmed anaphylactic (severe) reaction or to any of the vaccine’s ingredients

If your baby has had an allergic reaction to anything, let your health visitor or health professional know. They’ll be able to advise you further.
